Holistic Approach

I believe depression, anxiety and other mental health issues should be approached using a holistic approach. In addition to therapy, behavioral changes are necessary. Some of the following suggestions are helpful when addressing symptoms of depression and anxiety. When necessary, a patient may be referred to a psychiatric nurse practitioner or psychiatrist to be assessed for medication. However, we often see positive changes by incorporating the following coping strategies.

    • Exercise. At least three times a week, some kind of cardiovascular exercise for 30 minutes if possible.
    • Focusing and writing down positive events of the day. It does not have to be anything spectacular, just something small that made you smile or appreciated.
    • Meditation/relaxation technique
    • Having a hobby or interest in the home, that you participate in at least one time weekly. Generally, I suggest an activity that does not involve a screen and totally engages you. Is there something you enjoy doing that you have not made time for recently?
    • Having an interest outside the home that allows you to leave your normal routine and encourages being around others of like minds. We all need some form of social interaction aside from work/family life.
    • Diaphragmatic breathing
    • Proper nutrition. What we eat can affect the functioning and structure of the brain and your mood.
    • Sleep hygiene. Sleep is important for your mental health. Poor sleep has been associated with depression/anxiety. Sleep also affects cognitive functioning. If a person gets enough sleep, it helps to think more clearly, form long-term memories and perform better at work or school.
